PERMYJAYA, 17 June – Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the number of squatters in the city can be reduced with the construction of affordable rental units with prices between RM100 to RM200.

When met at Naim Land Gawai Dayak Open House yesterday, Lee said most of those who squat in Miri are from outside the city and had come here to work or find jobs.

“I have proposed for the Housing Commission to come up with such rental units for Miri earlier on, and I hope it can be done within the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

“Maybe after a few years, arrangements can also be made to help the tenants purchase the rental unit at affordable prices,” he told reporters.

He added that the effort will also enable more people from the low and middle income group to own a house in the city.

Touching on Permyjaya New Township which is being developed by Naim Land Sdn Bhd, Lee said there will also be more facilities there soon, including more schools as well as better and wider roads.

“By then the prices of properties may go up, so I urged those who wish to buy houses in Permyjaya to make the decision soon while the price is still not high,” he said.

The Gawai Dayak Open House was held at ‘Pine’ model house at Desa Bahagia, Permyjaya here. Also present was Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai.
